How Can We Improve Our Language Knowledge?

People always ask us some questions like "How can I improve my language" , "How can I learn English" or "Is it possible to learn language by myself". Though there is not a simple answer for this kind of questions, I would like to tell you some ways that you can use in order to improve your language knowledge

How to Improve Our Language?

Reading

Reading is always helpful, but in language learning it has some other benefits. First, through reading you will be able to see how language is used. Second, you will be able to learn new words in different contexts. Third, you will have fun in the learning process. These benefits might be a lot, but you get the importance. Read as much as you can.

Listening:

You like listening, right? It does not matter what you listen to. In order to learn the language, you need to understand what you hear and there is no better way to practice listening than listening to English materials. However, make sure that you understand at least 50% of what you are listening to.

Learn The Most Common 2000 English Words:

Without words, we cannot express anything, so knowing a language basically means knowing the words of that language. However, there might be a million of words in English, so how can we learn all of them? Or should we learn all of them? Of course not. Learning the most frequently used words is what you can best do in this situation and 2000 English words are enough for almost all purposes of learning the language.

Speak to Yourself in front of a Mirror:

We simply do not use the language because there is no one outside to speak with. This is our main problem, but it should not be an excuse. We have computer programs for this purpose, but some do not find it useful. So, what should we do? This might sound a bit crazy, but speaking to yourself is the best option I have in my mind. I use this method and I know that lots of people do that, though they deny it. This method works in this way: Go in front of a mirror and think that you are a different person and just speak as much as you can. Don't worry. You won't be insane ( I hope)

Use "Flashcards" Method

Learning a new word is not easy, especially if you are a new learner. However, the use of flashcards always helps you learn new words. This method works in this way. First, make some cards from pieces of the paper. Then, write the word you want to learn on the front of the card and write the definition on the back of the card. You might also write a simple example for that word. In addition, it is always better to write whether the word is a noun, an adjective, etc. You should make 20-30 cards for a day, so you will be able to study with these 20-30 words everyday. You might forget the words you have learned; at that moment you might refer to the flashcards you have created again. In this way you can a lot of words.

---------------------------------------

So, these are some ways to take into consideration for language improvement. Let's try it out and tell me your opinion about these ways on the comment section. You might also add some other ways that you find useful for this purpose. Thank you for your reading.

Argumentative Essay 2- First Draft- Should the law of capital punishment be passed again?-07.05.2014

First Draft- 7. Essay- Argumentative essay 2

Should the law of capital punishment be passed again?

The capital punishment is the punishment which involves killing someone who has committed a crime or crimes. Until the mid-twentieth century, the capital punishment was being employed for the people who had committed a crime or crimes. However, this law is fortunately no longer in use. Yet, today, the restoration of capital punishment is being argued by the authorities. Although some people may think that the restoration of capital punishment is necessary, I believe that the capital punishment should not be passed again because it may cause an innocent person to die, prison can sometimes improve a person, and execution is more expensive than life imprisonment.
First, the state should not restore the law of capital punishment because innocent people may be executed. Some people may think that the judges are the one who have got a lot of experience, so they are able to decide whether one is guilty or not. However, as they are also human beings, there always possibility exists that they make mistakes. According to a research that was done by Michael Radelet, in the United States, from 1900-2007, 426 people convicted of capital crimes, were later found innocent. 403 were released from death row, but 23 had already been executed. Is there any way to bring them to life?
Second, the state should not pass the law of capital punishment again because prison gives people the chance to change. Proponents of the restoration of capital punishment may think that capital punishment is sometimes the only way to provide the justice.  However, prisoners have the opportunity to change their bad behaviors, while executed people do not have any opportunity to do so. For example, Caryl Chessman, who had been claimed to be a rapist,  had taught people how to read and written several books before he was executed. As another example, Jaturun Siripongs, who had killed two liquor store employees, became a Buddhist monk while he was in prison. No matter how terrible the mistakes they have made, people can change.
Finally, the restoration of capital punishment should not be accepted because execution is more expensive than life imprisonment. Some people may think that taxpayers should not pay their tax for prisoners. However, the money spent for execution is more than the money spent for life imprisonment. According to the Los Angeles Times's report, in California, keeping people in prison for life costs 136 million dollars; however, executing them costs more than $250 million. The government spends millions of dollars on execution decision.
In sum, the restoration of capital punishment should not be passed again because innocent people may be executed,  prison help people change their bad behaviors, and imprisoning criminals is less expensive than executing them. Executing someone is violent and it undermines the respect the country gets from other countries. The core countries like France, Germany, and Switzerland have already abolished the capital punishment because they are aware of its bad results. Therefore, to be like one of those countries, the state should not focus on the restoration of capital punishment.

Should schools provide moral education for youth?

Morality is a concept that decides whether one's behavior is right or not. The youth learn their culture's moral values when they start to communicate with others. Although the youth learn those values from their parents, the current education system offers moral education at schools. Instruction in values should be left to parents because morality is not something to be learnt with books, teachers need to focus on teaching other lectures that parents cannot teach, and parents are the only ones who can teach their children how to behave.
First, some people may think that schools are the places that students can learn anything if they are taught well. However, no matter how teachers try, moral values cannot be taught. Students can only develop their morality by communicating with others. For example, students may develop their moral values when they learn the rules of the games and have quarrels with each other. However, when they study the books that are designed for teaching the morality, their behaviors do not change according to what they study. Furthermore, as students might feel the pressure of the examination of these lectures, teachers may affect their students' morality in a bad way while they are willing to help them develop it.
Second, as teachers need to focus on teaching students other lectures that parents cannot teach, instruction in values should be left to parents. Proponents of moral education at schools may claim that as teachers are the people who know about the moral values more than others, they should be the ones who teach those values. However, parents may not want a teacher to tell their children how to behave. My friend Murat, who was living in Germany, wanted his parents to send him to Turkey to study and his parents accepted his request. In Turkey, when he called a teacher by his first name, his teacher got frustrated and punished him by making him stand up on one foot. Being humiliated, Murat turned back to Germany and never came back. To avoid problems like that, teachers should only engage in teaching their lectures as they are supposed to.
Finally, instruction in values should be left to parents as parents are the only ones who can teach their children these moral values. According to Sigmund Freud(154), children most develop their moral values at the age of 3-6. He suggests that if parents cannot help their children to develop their moral values at that time, these children cannot easily apprehend what is right or wrong. Because of that, parents play a vital role in teaching their children the moral values. However, if parents believe that their children will get educated about the morality when they start going to school, they might pay no attention to teach the moral values. After that, when these children start going school, they may start to act up.
To sum up, instruction in values should be left to parents because teachers cannot teach the moral values like math, teachers should engage in teaching their lectures, and nobody can care about the children's morality more than parents. Today, the moral education still continues. Being a student for 14 years, I have not seen anything but embarrassment from these lectures. Generally, teachers give the answer sheet before the examination and students do not even have any idea why they take these lessons. Therefore, the Ministry of National Education should start the process and instruction in values should be left to parents.

What Has The Globalization Brought to Our Community-Fifth essay-Second draft-Cause and Effect 2- April 25, 2014

Fifth essay-Second draft-Cause and Effect-2

What Has The Globalization Brought to Our Community

Turkey, which is the country I have lived in since I was born, is located between mostly Asia and partially Europe. Where Turkey is located has led Turkey to get easily globalized. Even though Turkey was founded almost a hundred years ago, the time for Turkey to get globalized did not take long. By observing the last two decades, people can easily understand what special things in Turkey the globalization has brought and what special things in Turkey the globalization has destroyed. In Turkey, the effects of the globalization are both positive and negative, which can be observed on five points: the way people work, get educated, travel, communicate, and live in their homes.
First, to understand the effects of the globalization in Turkey, how Turkey has been affected from the changes in the work life must be carefully observed. Before the globalization, there were not so many job opportunities in Turkey. Because of that, people had to get by with what they were gaining from farming; however, they could manage to live with the food they produced. With the changes the globalization has brought things have dramatically changed. Today, there are a lot of job opportunities in Turkey. However, the rate of people who are unemployed is more than it was used to be. The number of people who farm to get by is so few. People have moved to big cities to find some jobs that have more income than farming. As the population of the big cities have grown, the opportunity of finding jobs has become more difficult. Furthermore, as the education system has grown, the requirements to get a job have risen, too.
Second, to understand the effects of the globalization in Turkey, how Turkey has been affected from the changes in the education must be carefully observed. Before the globalization, as the technologic developments were neither widely known nor used in the education system, the lecturers were only studied with books, notebooks, and blackboards. As they were not useful in every moment, students were struggling to study their lectures. Furthermore, the number of schools was not so much, so students had to walk more than an hour to reach their schools. As the transportation was nothing like how it is now, even a rich family’s child had to suffer from those problems. However, with the changes the globalization has brought things have significantly changed. Today, the technologic developments help students study their lecture whenever they want and wherever they like. There are a lot of schools in every location; however, students do not have to go to a school to study. Homeschooling and distance learning are two options of studying without going to a school. However, the globalization has led people to move to the big cities and crowded classes prevent students from understanding the context of a lecture.
Third, to understand the effects of the globalization in Turkey, how Turkey has been affected from the changes in the transportation must be carefully observed. Before the globalization, talking about the transportation only meant riding a horse and the automobiles were not like how they are now. Even in the big cities, people were able to drive their cars only on the main roads as the roads were not arranged for cars. As the transportation was not developed, serious problems that occurred before the globalization usually ended up with sadness. However, with the changes the globalization has brought things have dramatically changed. Today, people can travel anywhere and the time they spend when they are on their way is so little compared to the time people spent before the globalization. However, the traffic is generally a big problem in the big cities. Nevertheless, there are a lot of options such as planes and buses to travel around the country or abroad. Furthermore, the highly developed subway system allows people who live in the big cities to travel around the city, which is both fast and cheap. However, the damage the new developed transportation vehicles cause to the environment is huge and incurable.
Fourth, to understand the effects of the globalization in Turkey, how Turkey has been affected from the changes in the way of how people communicate must be carefully observed.  Before the globalization, people could only use phones, faxes, and letters to communicate with others. The communication devices were not developed, so people had to go to some stations to use those devices. However, with the changes the globalization has brought things have dramatically changed. Today, people can easily communicate with phones, faxes, and letters, but those things are not popular as they were used to be before the globalization. There are some websites that people can connect and communicate with both their acquaintances and the people they do not know in their real life. There is no beyond in the communication system after the globalization. However, today, the people who used old ways to communicate such as writing letters claim that those old ways were more pleasant.
Fifth, to understand the effects of the globalization in Turkey, how Turkey has been affected from the changes in people’s residents must be carefully observed. Before globalization, people were living in small houses, which generally had gardens in front. The gardens were useful for people because they could grow plants and had their dinner there. Where they were living was nice, but as the buildings had not been built in terms of the dangers of earthquakes, people dramatically suffered from the consequences of earthquakes before the globalization. However, with the changes the globalization has brought things have dramatically changed. Today, people have the change of living in huge buildings. These buildings do not offer a garden for its residents, but they have pools, parks, and sport centers. As the structure of the buildings is arranged by observing the dangers of earthquakes, people do not have to care about the earthquake. Moreover, people live in the big buildings, but unfortunately the concept of being a neighbor is not important to them as it was before the globalization.
To sum up, the globalization has affected the way we work, get educated, travel, communicate, and live in our house. These effects can be both positive and negative. However, people always need to change the way they live, otherwise there will be no points why we live. How we lived our life must have a meaning to the world we live in, otherwise we would live the same life with someone who had lived before us. To avoid that, we need to be open to the changes our life does offer.
